On
Thursday, July 4 Verde Canyon Railroad will celebrate Independence Day with
their annual Firecracker Express which begins with a traditional all-American
barbecue and patriotic music in the depot’s shaded courtyard. At 1 p.m.
you’ll board our historic train pulled by vintage locomotives adorned with
American bald eagles that pull coaches along century-old ribbons of rail into
the rich and unspoiled landscape of the Verde Canyon. You can celebrate
America’s birthday by riding the waves of a fruit smoothie under bruised
monsoon skies and kaleidoscopic rainbows which are the celebrities on our
mid-summer Canyon stage. You’ll be back in time for Cottonwood’s dazzling
fireworks.

On
summer evenings, it’s not just the stars that come out to play in Verde
Canyon. As the sun slips behind distant mountains, cool air sweeps through
the Canyon signaling the resident wildlife to begin their nightly rounds. The
Canyon comes alive with the luminous glow of moon-kissed skies on Verde
Canyon Railroad’s popular Saturday Starlight Tours. On select Saturday
evenings, the train departs the depot at 5:30 p.m.. As it rumbles through the
Canyon, the low slant of sun bathes the high cliffs in soft golden hues. The
train reaches the turn-around point of Perkinsville amid a scandalous sunset.
The return trip offers a serene glimpse into the nocturnal wildlife set
against a dazzling canvas of celestial bodies. Grape Train Escapes are
rolling wine-tasting adventures where select wineries purvey their wines
which we pair with delectable appetizers. History comes alive around every
bend whether you’re relaxing in the comfort of a first-class car or on an
open-air viewing car enjoying the true essence of Arizona outdoors … with a
glass of wine in your hand.
